"World of Pure Imagination" Part 1 of 3

Guys... help me out here. I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I look at this thing I created posted above and what the fuck is it?

This isn't the look I have in mind for this series. I had wanted a slick Transmetropolitan meets 1990's Disney animated TV shows look with heavy blacks and smooth, jazzy lines.

But this is what's coming out. This weird, simplistic, pastel-colored, pencil-texture... mess? I never wanted to draw like this. What the hell? Have I tapped into some bizarre part of my consciousness that I didn't know existed? If I have, I don't really like it but I'm having the damnedest time fighting.

People? Please be honest with me. Do you like this? Do you think this could be successful? Do you think there's a broad appeal here? I have absolutely no idea anymore.

I'm a little scared here, folks.

I'm sorry I know this doesn't really refer to anything you asked but did he say 'MS'? As in Multiple Sclerosis? My mom has that it it just Kinda gave me a shock. I don't see much about it outside of specialized sites.
On another note, I actually like your style, the simplicity is nice and it's certainly better than anything I could do digitally. ^^; The story intrigues me as well. =) Good job.

Keep on drawing! ^^/

Multiple Sclerosis, yes.
Quentin and co. work for Farsight Medical, a company focusing on "fixing" the human species by working to eradicate all the ailments that, they believe, should have been taken care of generations ago. They have unorthodox methods but they only use volunteers. It's a morally-complicated situation.
We see a lot of disabled and terminally ill people in the series - kind of the opposite of most common sci-fi Übermen bullshit that I hate so much.

It's a really cool story idea and I look forward to seeing more from it. I can see where the morally complicated thing would come in. From what I've seen of your work so far you're really good at handling tough issues well. =)

I must say, the lack of a background helps to emphasize the space in the beginning, and the progression into a gradient really helps the increasing seriousness of the mood. The final close up (and the contrast in demeanour) to the speaker is excellent for a cliffhanger.
(Also, the eye colour change looks serious.)

Thank you!
I think you'll like part two. The mood is darker and the segway into part three is VERY different.

Does a cake of questionable truthfulness feature in any part of it? :D (because that would seem like a suitably tragic sort of let down for our Mr. Happy and cured here)

Well, yes and no.

This meme/comic may explain a little (panel 3 to be exact)

Hmm, hmm. Okay, since you are asking :D

I think I see where you are going - in this particular comic, though, you are exactly "going". As in, I see hints of that particular light, cartoony style (especially in the pannels were the man stands up from sitting), but it looks to me like it's still developping. Don't get discouraged, though - when the style is changing it sometimes feels like weird works are produced because we just try different grounds and it takes a while to learn to walk on them comfortably.
I know I've seen the hints of the style I'm thinking of in some of your other works (I think the villain meme and the origins of Quentin, where you draw people seen from afar in some pannels), and if I notice it again, I'm gonna let you know.

And Brian! Instantly thought of Monty Python xD

About one of your replies here - I don't like most of the finished, perfect works either, I think you described well the feeling of it being so perfect it's a turn-off. I mean, I like some detailed, neat works, but that's not exactly the same thing. Also why I dislike photorealism xD

And I'm intrigued to see more :D

I agree with you, that it probably just looks weird to me right now because it's developing. I like the cartoony-from-afar look (getting out of the wheelchair) since I first saw it in comics by the Hernendez brothers and Jason Youngbluth (check them out, they're WONDERFUL!).

I guess I keep going back to the rough, pencil look precisely because I like that is shows some of the work that has been involved, thus connecting the audience with the creator. With the super detailed, photorealistic or 'shiny' images, I feel as though they were made by magic, not real human hands.

I like  but I think maybe using pure white is a bit too, uhm, white? XD and maybe the color grading downwards could be more vivid and perhaps slightly more foreboding? the odd thing is, on the little scale I see the impact it has but once you zoom in its not quite the same...well done none the less and I hope this helps. :3
